Last week, De Salis marked the beginning of Black History Month with a special assembly celebrating the achievements, contributions and influence of inspirational Black British figures. Members of our support staff took centre stage, sharing the stories of Black British individuals who have personally inspired them and explaining the impact these figures have had on their lives.
The assembly offered students an opportunity to discover different role models, reflect on their achievements and appreciate the importance of representation, diversity and inclusion.
The assembly also reflected our Studio College ethos and 6Rs, particularly the importance of being Reflective, Responsible and Respectful. It encouraged everyone to reflect on the experiences and achievements of others, recognise their responsibility to promote inclusion and show respect for the diverse backgrounds and perspectives within our community.
On Friday 2nd October, Year 9 students, along with 2 Year 10 students visited Thorpe Park as part of a Physics and STEM enrichment trip, exploring how science, technology, engineering and mathematics are applied in the design and operation of theme park rides.
The visit brought classroom learning to life, allowing students to consider physics concepts such as forces, motion, acceleration and energy through real-world examples.
Of course, there was also plenty of time to enjoy the park’s thrilling rides and attractions, making the day both educational and memorable. From the speed of the rollercoasters to the forces behind every twist and turn, the trip demonstrated that physics can be just as exciting outside the classroom as the rides themselves.
Following our recent Student Voice elections, we are pleased to introduce our newly elected Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary. The election followed presentations on the Trading Floor, where candidates addressed the whole College and shared why they wanted to represent their fellow students. We were extremely pleased with the confidence shown by everyone who put themselves forward and would like to thank all students who took part and cast their vote.
Our new Student Voice team will play an important role in listening to their peers, bringing forward their views, ideas and concerns, and helping to shape College life.
We look forward to seeing our Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary grow into their new roles and ensure that student voices continue to be heard and valued across De Salis.
Last week, De Salis held nominations for Student Voice, with students putting themselves forward for the roles of Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary and the opportunity to represent their peers across the College.
Following the nomination process, five candidates took to the Trading Floor to address the whole College, each delivering a two-minute pitch explaining why they felt they were suited to the role. Speaking in front of their peers was a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate confidence, communication and leadership skills, while sharing the ideas and priorities they would bring to Student Voice.
Students then cast their votes individually, ensuring everyone had an equal opportunity to make their own choice. Student Voice is an important part of our commitment to listening to students’ opinions, ideas and experiences. Through their elected Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary, students have their own representatives to raise issues, share ideas and help shape College life.
At The Rosedale Hewens Academy Trust, the safety and wellbeing of everyone in our community is our top priority. In line with updated guidance, we are introducing a new approach to ensure that individuals who may need assistance during an emergency—such as those with disabilities or temporary mobility challenges—are fully supported.
The College recently held a pre-trip meeting for Parents, Guardians and Carers ahead of the upcoming residential trip to France and Belgium. The session provided important information about the itinerary, travel arrangements, safety measures, and expectations for students during the trip. Parents, Guardians and Carers had the opportunity to ask questions and ensure they were fully prepared for the experience, while staff highlighted the educational and cultural benefits of the visit. The meeting marked an important step in preparing students and families for what promises to be an a memorable and enriching oversees trip.
