French Residential Trip - Pre Trip Meeting

The College recently held a pre-trip meeting for Parents, Guardians and Carers ahead of the upcoming residential trip to France and Belgium. The session provided important information about the itinerary, travel arrangements, safety measures, and expectations for students during the trip. Parents, Guardians and Carers had the opportunity to ask questions and ensure they were fully prepared for the experience, while staff highlighted the educational and cultural benefits of the visit. Visit from MP, John McDonnell

On Monday 12th January, we were fortunate enough to be visited by our local MP, The Right Hon. John McDonnell. Mr McDonnell is a longstanding friend of our Trust and of De Salis and has been very giving of his time. So much so, in fact, that he joked, ‘I think they’re going to give me my own office at De Salis one of these days.’ Before Christmas a number of our students had expressed concerns about the increasingly divided world it seems that we live in. Mr McDonnell actually extolled the multicultural values we hold at De Salis and spoke about the need for communities to stick together, protect their most vulnerable members, and not buy into divisive dogma. This ties into our affirmation of values at De Salis: ‘In our diversity we are strong; In our strength we are united.’ We are grateful to have an MP who genuinely cares about our College and our students.

Girls Link Up Workshop

This week, De Salis students began the exciting ‘Girls Link Up’ Workshop, an inspiring eight-week programme that they have already thoroughly enjoyed. Designed to empower young women with the skills, confidence and knowledge to launch their own businesses, the workshop guides participants through the key stages of entrepreneurship. Students will explore how to identify business ideas, conduct market research, and develop strong business models before presenting their own startup concepts. Along the way, they’ll have the opportunity to connect with successful female entrepreneurs, receive valuable mentorship, and collaborate with like-minded peers.

Kite Flying in The Chilterns

Ms Massey has been as active as ever in providing extracurricular enrichment to our students. A life-affirming outing in the breathtakingly beautiful Chiltern Hills for some kite flying fun. This was followed by a descent to the Chess Valley and a geographically rare chalk stream which is home to many healthy brown and rainbow trout and the grayling (they all evaded capture).

Year 11 French Trip

No sooner were the students back for a new academic year than the mini-bus was once again headed for Folkestone to board Le Shuttle to France! We managed to dodge the showers whilst exploring the picturesque old town of Boulogne, the ramparts, the citadel and the moat. Students were in awe of the fabulous dome inside the Cathedral of Notre Dame. After lunch, it was the popular hypermarket before taking the wild, rugged coastal road to Wissant beach. The winds meant the surf was up, and the group marvelled at the skills of the kite surfers who laid on a marvellous show! Mr Burke is considering taking up a new sport as it seems to hold the key to longevity!

Prom 2025

Themed “A Night Under The Stars”, the venue was transformed into a glittering nightscape where students arrived dressed in stunning outfits, each showcasing their individual style and flair.

This week we said a fond farewell to our Year 11 cohort after their successful GCSE examinations by hosting our annual Leavers Award assembly. Students were celebrated not only for their academic achievements but also recognised for their efforts and remarkable personalities. Students enjoyed listening to citations and enthusiastically cheered on their peers. We hope all our year 11’s take a well deserved break and we are looking forward to the return of some of our students in Year 12 in September, whilst extending our best wishes to all our other students on their future endeavours.

The Year 9 students at De Salis Studio College recently hosted their Easter Extravaganza event, where parents, guardians, carers, staff and students, came together to celebrate the season. Ramadan Assembly

Year 11 students delivered a wonderful assembly to share the significant occasion of Ramadan. This was a vibrant event which brought students and staff together to highlight the importance of this occasion whilst honouring the cultural significance of Ramadan. It was a meaningful gathering that fostered a sense of appreciation for diverse traditions. Students observing Ramadan have been provided with quiet spaces for prayer whilst ensuring a sensitive handling of fasting needs here at De Salis.

Hezron Brown Assembly

On Friday 31st January, Year 10 and 11 students enjoyed an assembly hosted by Hezron Brown. The theme around the assembly was Bullying and enabled students to feel focused and confident in a positive environment where they felt comfortable to discuss the topic and debunk the traits around bullying. Hezron is a frequent visitor of De Salis and our students always enjoy interacting with him.

Holocaust Memorial Day

On Wednesday 29th of January an assembly was held to highlight Holocaust Memorial Day 2025. The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day was “For a Better Future”. The assembly highlighted the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Jews from AuschwitzBirkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, the 31st anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia. The assembly allowed students to reflect on the tragedies by antisemitism to families and nations. Students were engaged and shared their thoughts and feelings about these events. The key take away points from the presentation and discussions with the students includes, not taking our freedom for granted, learning about the Holocaust and more recent genocides can help us all to identify the warning signs in the world around us, report (abuse, antisemitism and hate crimes) and take actions to make a better future for all.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Monday 20th January marked Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and our students at De Salis took it upon themselves to present his life story during assembly. Students reflected upon the work and values of Dr King. and discussed the fact that some people in high[1]profile positions today do not appear to share his humanism and kindness but agreed that at De Salis, our values reflect some of the things he held dear. Dr Martin Luther King Jnr: One of the greatest moral leaders the world has known.

De Salis Visits Wimbledon

On Tuesday 14th January, our Year 10 students were afforded the opportunity to visit the world-famous All England Tennis Club at Wimbledon. They saw the iconic show courts (Centre and No.1), visited the Wimbledon Tennis Museum and were generally given a comprehensive tour of the grounds. They also took part in an enriching Trailblazers educational session, learning more about how BAME, gay, disabled and working-class people forced their way into what was once seen as a very elite sport.

On the last day of term our friends at Hewens College loaned us their wonderful facilities for us to host our end of year achievement assembly. This allowed us to invite parents, guardians and carers to witness our excellent choir and dance troupe who put on a festive fanfare to celebrate a successful year for De Salis. After the performances, we presented awards to our highest achieving students which ended 2024 on a real high.

On Thursday 5th December, students and staff came together to celebrate the annual De Salis Christmas Lights Switch-On. The event featured a delightful performance by our College Choir, who sang their favourite Christmas songs and even showcased a short dance to bring extra cheer. To conclude the festivities, Santa and his Elf joined in to spread some Christmas joy, handing out chocolates to everyone in attendance. It was a heart-warming celebration that truly captured the festive spirit. A huge thank you to all who participated and made this event so memorable!

During Enrichment week, students in Year 10 embarked on an unforgettable autumn adventure during the deer rutting season. Building on the success of last year’s outing, they set out to track wildlife and were rewarded with incredible sightings of five large herds. The students observed majestic stags, mixed groups, and playful fawns and juveniles that looked straight out of a scene from Bambi! The silent stalking added to the sense of peace and wonder, making it a truly immersive experience.

On the first day of half term, a packed mini-bus headed to the Chiltern Hills. After a bracing walk across the rolling hills, which afforded some spectacular views across this AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) it was into Hodgemoor Woods for a little shelter building before moving on to the Colne Valley Nature Reserve. It was lovely to watch some sailing on Bury Lake, then on to the peaceful Stockers Lake to observe and appreciate the amazing range of birds that call this home.

Cadbury World

The Year 11 students were taken on an educational trip to Cadbury World in the West Midlands. De Salis being a Business college, they were all fascinated to learn more about how a multinational corporation deals with production processes, marketing and branding. The everyday ubiquity and familiarity of some of the products gave the trip a real life feel that our students could relate to. They behaved impeccably and asked incisive, intelligent questions. They were even allowed to have a little fun.

Anti-Slavery Day

On Friday 18th October, we observe Anti-Slavery Day which falls within Black History Month and was the theme of this week’s Full College Assembly. This is a very important day to raise awareness about the issue of modern slavery and human trafficking, which unfortunately still affect millions of people worldwide, including children and adults. Modern slavery takes many forms, including forced labor, child exploitation, and human trafficking. It is important for us all to understand that even though slavery was abolished many years ago, it still exists in different ways today, often hidden but very real. In our affirmation of values, we say ‘’In our strength we are united / In our unity we are De Salis.’’ As a community we hold that nobody should be treated as inferior because of any arbitrary difference. This is a core belief that is central to our College’s ethos. It is important to recognise that injustices have happened throughout human history, but it is even more important that we learn from them. A special assembly was held where we watched a short video and heard stories about how young people around the world are taking action against exploitation. Together, we can help spread awareness and fight modern slavery. Let’s all be part of the solution!

Ghandi’s Birthday

Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday is celebrated on the 2nd of October each year, a day observed as ‘Gandhi Jayanti’ in India. This day honors his legacy as a leader of India’s nonviolent independence movement against British colonial rule. Globally, it is also marked as the ‘International Day of Non-Violence.’ Students learnt of Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolent resistance (Satyagraha) which inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

Your Life, Your Choice Workshop

On Wednesday 8th May, De Salis hosted the Your Life, Your Choice workshop, which saw presentations from services such as the London Ambulance, Metropolitan Police, Youth Justice and Youth Engagement, to name a few. The workshop aims to teach students some of the key fundamentals of life from drug awareness to first aid and knife crime. Students found the sessions to be of great value and helped them to gain valuable and transferable skills. A Massive thank you to the team for attending and engaging with our students.

De Salis Culture Day

On Friday 3rd May, students at De Salis celebrated De Salis Culture Day. Students and staff brought in magnificent cultural artifacts, as well as non-perishable cultural food which allowed all to diverge into oneanother’s community and culture. As they do each year, students held a performance and presentation, which showcased and celebrated the culture they represent, with staff doing theirs too! In our diversity, we are strong. Jack Petchey Speak Out Contest

As part of our assembly on Thursday 23rd May, we celebrated a wonderful achievement. Omar from Year 10 came second in the Jack Petchey Digital Speak Out debating competition, which includes contestants from schools and colleges all over London and Essex. Omar’s speech was about countries without borders and freedom of movement. We are very proud!

Dr Chocs Chocolate Factory

Last week saw 12 of our Year 10 and 11 girls attend an enrichment trip to Dr Chocs Chocolate Factory in Windsor. Students were given a demonstration on how to make their very own bar before getting the chance to do it themselves! The trip was enjoyed by all, especially the chocolate taste testing!

Year 11 House of Commons Trip

Indoor Farm

Today year 10 students visited the Innovation Agri-Tech Group (IAG) to understand more about indoor farming, ways food production was affecting climate change and research and innovation in the agri-food chain. The indoor farm facility is at the cutting edge of innovation, using aeroponics as a novel way of growing food. Students were able to smell and taste a variety of produce such as edible flowers, lettuce, basil and coriander. Students also learned how scientists were able to adjust the amount of nutrients, water, temperature and even the colour of light to produce the ideal growing conditions for plants. Finally, students met with members of the IAG team, asked questions and heard first-hand how they became involved in the sector as well as the different job opportunities in the agri-food sector.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

On Friday 29th September, De Salis Studio College proudly hosted a Macmillan Coffee Morning. The purpose of the event was to raise money for Macmillan’s cancer support which helps support the amazing nurses, answer calls on their support line, give financial support and more. De Salis saw an amazing turnout of parents, guardians and carers along with students attend to grab their drink and treat for a small donation, the event also allowed the De Salis community to flower and create stronger connections with each other whilst supporting a tremendous cause. In preparation for the event, our business savvy students took initiative in the planning and implementing of the day, from setting up and taking cash to also ensuring allergens were clearly displayed and accounted for with the many scrumptious donations we received of cake, biscuits and sweet treats. We also want to say a massive thank you to Mrs Cassidy for leading the event and helping our students to raise an amazing £130 for Macmillan Cancel Support. Centre of the Cell

On Wednesday 27th September, Year 9 students visited the Centre of the Cell which is a Science Education Centre at Queen Mary, university of London. As part of their Key Stage 3 studies students were captivated by the virtual displays and interactive games which opened their eyes and enabled them to learn interactively about the amazing world of cells, the Human body and the latest medical research.

A Night on the Red Carpet

As a celebratory finish to the culmination of Year 11, Students at De Salis and across The Rosedale Hewens Academy Trust came together for their ‘Night on the Red Carpet’ prom. From topnotch cars, fancy dresses and even shiny tuxedos, the Year 11 Prom was certainly the event of the year! Students enjoyed their time on the dance floor whilst making use of the photo booths and trying their hand at the 360 cameras before the night ended off with a traditional Prom King and Queen crowning, followed by a vote of greatest teacher, which went to none other than our Assistant Principal, Mr Donning. The students had a night to remember, and our staff are extremely proud of the young adults they are becoming.

Sports Day 2023

On Thursday 13th July, students in Years 10 and 11 from across The Rosedale Hewens Academy Trust met at the Hillingdon Athletics Ground to kick start Sports Day. From events such as track, shot-put, javelin, and relay, De Salis proved harmonious in their team work and support. Well done to all students who took part and made De Salis Proud!

Alliance Challenge 2023

Monday 7th July marked the first day of Alliance Challenge for students at De Salis. Alliance Challenge is a TRUST organised event, in which students work as teams on several group projects such as a windmill building, chess contest, a treasure hunt and more. This year’s theme for Alliance Challenge is “Unity in Diversity” which can be seen in the students’ projects over the week. Alliance Challenge continues into next week, where we are excited to find out our winners!

Post 16 Visit to J.P. Morgan Chase

On Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th July, 30 of our current Post 16 Year 12 students were afforded the opportunity to visit the J.P. Morgan Chase offices in Embankment and Canary Wharf. This was made possible through the Trust’s current partnership with Diversity Org. During the visits, students were given the chance to interact with employees from the J.P. Morgan Chase office through custom-made workshops: • Career Exposure Panel - A panel discussion where representatives from the company share their past route of education and career path. • Financial Health & Literacy – A panel discussion where students learn financial responsibility (e.g. spending & saving habits), how to establish credit and understand how interest rates work. • Overcoming Imposter Syndrome – A panel discussion aimed to help students build the confidence needed to speak on their skills and accomplishments as well as identify imposter syndrome triggers.
